Sled hockey is an exciting game where everyone plays using a sled that is on blades similar to skate blades. The bucket seat provides some side and back support for players as they learn to propel themselves on the ice. Players use two hockey sticks which have an ice pick on one end to grip the ice as they move around, and the stick is flipped over to use the flat side to hit the puck.
Some sleds have an adaptive attachment that allows a standup skater to push the players, which is great for players with limited upper-body mobility and/or strength.
The game itself is very similar to standup hockey — a goalie for each team keeps the puck from entering the goal area; two teams rally to score the most goals during a game. Players learn defense and offense moves as they gain skills.
Try It Clinics focus mainly on introducing potential players to the equipment, learning basic skills of how to propel themselves and slap pucks around. As participants gain skills and confidence, they may easily transition to sled hockey team programs!
We encourage family, siblings, and friends to attend Try It Clinics together and learn about this game! We have many people with and without disabilities who have discovered the joy of this game and have learned to play alongside each other!
