A 524-mile Vision of Accessibility and Inclusion!

On July 30, 2024, New York Power Authority and NY Canal Corporation announced their new Accessibility Education Program that launches a vision of inclusion of people with disabilities in recreation and tourism across the Erie Canalway!

Celebrating the culmination of hours and hours of conversations and community building with this historic commitment to inclusion of people with disabilities, this new program will match Rochester Accessible Adventures’ consultative mentored Inclusion Partnerships with recreation businesses. The program marks a definitive commitment to matching resources, education, and support to recreation businesses along the Canal so that they can provide their services to people with and without disabilities.

Targeting the On the Canals program that began during the Covid pandemic to rally communities around the outdoor recreation opportunities along the Erie Canal, Rochester Accessible Adventures will work with providers to instill our multi-layered mentored inclusion services to:

  • Remove existing barriers to participation by people with intellectual, developmental and physical disabilities and medical conditions
  • Empower businesses to operate with full inclusion with resources in place to support their services
  • Enhance outreach efforts that will directly connection people with disabilities to these inclusive opportunities
