Kadie

Challenge:

Staying active and connected to nature for a country girl living in the city is something that Kadie has to work at. For Kadie, born with a spinal condition that affects her ability to walk for long periods of time and also being deaf, community recreational activities have not always been an easy option to pursue.

Solution:

Kadie discovered RAA and began trying out the variety of inclusive and adaptive sports opportunities that had been created in the community. Having this “menu” of options was a great way for Kadie to sample activities and find ones that she really wanted to participate in. Knowing she had CHOICE was very meaningful.

What’s to try? Sled hockey, fencing, cycling, kayaking, wheelchair rugby and mountain biking are just a few of the activities Kadie has tried out. And these provide great year-round opportunities for staying active and staying connected with others who also enjoy these activities.

Kadie, now an avid cyclist and paddler, has been featured in the media https://www.depaul.org/2022/11/02/story-of-hope-nothing-stops-kadie-tower/ and recently on WXXI’s Road to Inclusion series https://www.wxxinews.org/local-news/2022-10-07/the-road-to-inclusion-adaptive-biking-brings-locals-and-visitors-to-rochester-area-trails?fbclid=IwAR04NIpKuSiRn3cdDUKKM8sa1rpUuumfS1CYfNnoyzYrn3AIAZAfRPow8fQ.  She also participated in a video/photoshoot for the Erie Canal National Heritage Corridor. A true advocate for inclusive recreation, we are sure to hear more about her journey in the future!

Purchasing a handcycle and kayak, Kadie has challenged herself by participating in the Erie Canal Canalway Challenge. She set her personal goal at 90 miles during Summer 2022 – and traveled along the canalway to sample new sections each week. Now, for the 180 Mile Goal!

Kadie is determined to stay active and to bring awareness to others living with disabilities that they can too!
