RAA Celebrates a Summer of Wheelchair Tennis
This summer, Rochester Accessible Adventures (RAA) took strides in growing the wheelchair tennis community through an inclusive and engaging program. With support from the United States Tennis Association (USTA) and partnerships with a local venue, Pieters Family Life Center, RAA offered wheelchair tennis classes that introduced players of all ages and abilities to the sport. Whether seasoned athletes or first-time players, participants embraced the joy, camaraderie, and competition wheelchair tennis has to offer.
RAA’s program provided the equipment, coaching, and support necessary to make the game accessible. Thanks to a generous investment by the USTA, which included specialized training and adaptive equipment, RAA could expand its outreach to even more players and community centers. These resources enabled RAA to train local tennis pros in the techniques and approaches necessary to coach players using wheelchairs, fostering a spirit of inclusion within the regional tennis community.
One of the most rewarding aspects of the summer program was watching participants’ confidence grow as they honed their skills and developed new friendships. With each session, players discovered that wheelchair tennis is not only about athleticism but also empowerment and community. RAA is committed to helping be a part of the solution in planning the development of accessible and inclusive sports opportunities in the Greater Rochester region, and looks forward to expanding its impact in the seasons to come.
