RAA Ignites More Change in May 2024!

Our May DirectConnect impact numbers are out…and they are exciting!
From riding bikes with Browncroft Community Church members with our Inclusion Partner, Erie Canal Boat Company, to introducing people who are blind or have low vision to the sport of fencing with our Inclusion Partner, Ludus Fencing Studio, the month was action-packed!
Many thanks to our May Inclusion in Action Sponsor, REI Cooperative Action Fund, for helping make inclusion happen across the month!
Just a regular day in the life of RAA! Our May numbers are right on track:
  • 1,058 people impacted
  • 4 events
  • 14.5 hours of engagement
  • 31 volunteer hours
Here are a few more things we were working on in May:
  1. Inclusion Training for librarians across the state
  2. Planning the development of universal design restrooms at an area park
  3. A night of research poster presentations with Naz OT students on the impact of pickleball on people living with Parkinson’s
  4. Working on NYS’s Open Space PlanY strategic planning committee
  5. Conducting Volunteer Orientation for our newest volunteers
  6. Discussing the State of Recreation with the Genesee Valley Recreation & Parks Society, of which RAA is a member organization
  7. Celebrating the opening of a new accessible skatepark with our Inclusion Partner, Perinton Recreation & Parks
  8. Meeting the community at our REI Cooperative Action Fund store partner, REI-Rochester
  9. Participating in an Erie Canalway Amenities Study on Accessibility
  10. Working with our Inclusion Partners, Greater Rochester YMCA and Genesee Land Trust, to continue to remove barriers and implement inclusion throughout the organizations
That’s just the top 10 things we did in May!
We’ve also been busy sharing out things that are coming up in June and July, as we Directly Connect the community to accessible and inclusive opportunities like these:
  • whitewater rafting, generously supported by the Dralla Foundation.
  • kayaking and cycling which are available to all EVERY day of the season at Erie Canal Boat Company.
  • birding with the Genesee Valley Audubon Society.
  • parafencing with Ludus Fencing Studio.
  • a new accessible dog park opening up in Victor Parks & Recreation.
  • a new accessible birding platform that is being built at Salmon Creek Nature Preserve by Genesee Land Trust.

We encourage you to stay up to date so you don’t miss out on all of these accessible and inclusive opportunities!  We Are Making Inclusion Happen! Come join in!
