Rochester Accessible Adventures Announces Community Grant Funding from The Parkinson’s Foundation

ROCHESTER, NEW YORK – May 29, 2019 – ROCHESTER ACCESSIBLE ADVENTURES (RAA) is proud to announce it has received Community Grant funding from The Parkinson’s Foundation to support health and wellness needs in the PD community.

“The support we’re receiving from the Parkinson’s Foundation community grant will help reach many of the 4,000 individuals with PD and their families within the Greater Rochester region,” said Anita O’Brien, Executive Director of Rochester Accessible Adventures. “We are thrilled that we can now provide people with Parkinson’s and their care partners this unique connection to inclusive community programming that will change the way they live with PD for the better.”

Rochester Accessible Adventures’ project, Inspiring Hope Improving Ability, starts in May 2019 and will connect individuals with PD, and their caregivers, family members and friends to active recreation opportunities within the community so that they can experience both physical and social benefits that are critical to maintaining quality of life with this diagnosis. The project is a combination of education, outreach, and ‘red carpet’ events, along with incentives for on-going participation. The Parkinson’s Foundation awarded more than $1.5 million in community grants. This year’s grant cycle focused on three areas including: programs that provide a service for underserved PD communities, initiatives that reach the newly diagnosed and clinical trial education and participation that reach those under-represented in the PD community.

About Parkinson’s Disease
Affecting nearly one million Americans and 10 million worldwide, Parkinson’s disease is the second-most common neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer’s and is the 14th-leading cause of death in the United States. It is associated with a progressive loss of motor control (e.g., shaking or tremor at rest and lack of facial expression), as well as non-motor symptoms (e.g., depression and anxiety). There is no cure for Parkinson’s and 60,000 new cases are diagnosed each year in the United States alone.
