Family+Friends = Tennis for Everyone!

A Fabulous Day on the Courts!
What happens when you put modified rackets, oversized courts full of red balls, and a whole crowd of mothers, fathers, adult children, friends, and partners together on a sunny afternoon?
You get a fabulous day.
That’s exactly what unfolded at our Red Ball Tennis Social — and the courts were buzzing from the first serve. So much fun, and so much more than a game.

Gathering on the court as Coach Caroline sets the stage for the day.
“I can actually play tennis!”
Some moments you don’t script — you just get to witness them. And this day was full of those kinds of stories. We heard, in real time, what inclusion sounds like when it finally clicks:
“I can actually play tennis!”
“I am SO ready for this now!”
“This was so much more than I ever thought possible!”
“This is the first time we’ve played tennis together!”
“This is the first activity — recreation — that we’ve been able to do together since the accident.”
That last one really resonates with us. Because this was never only about learning a sport. It was about families and friends stepping onto the same court, side by side, and doing something together that some of them weren’t sure was possible anymore. That, of course, is at the heart of what we do at RAA!

Coaching that brings everyone onto the court together
Our coaches made the difference. Avi from Perinton Recreation and Parks and Caroline from Greater Buffalo Adaptive Sports worked with players to build their skills — but they went a step further. They coached friends and family members to play with each other, too.
We love this particular approach. It’s the difference between a fun afternoon and a lasting change. When everyone in the group learns the game together, they don’t always need a special event to keep playing. They can grab their rackets, head to their neighborhood courts, and keep the rally going on their own. That’s inclusion that lasts well past the final serve.

Both courts full — everyone in on one of the skill-building games.
What makes Red Ball Tennis so welcoming
If you’ve never seen it, Red Ball Tennis is designed to get people playing fast. Backed by the United States Tennis Association (USTA), it uses modified rackets, softer low-bounce balls, and adjusted rules for easier, relaxed play. The result is a game that’s genuinely easy to learn — so folks are rallying and laughing within minutes instead of getting tangled up in technique.
Easy to pick up. Easy to enjoy. Easy to keep doing together. That’s the whole idea.

Tennis really does make us REACH!
And a little friendly competition never hurts
Once the skills were flowing, the games got going — friendly, spirited, and full of good energy across the net.

Squaring off for a friendly rally — Red Ball style.
With thanks to the partners who made it happen
A day like this comes together because people believe in it. Our deep thanks go to:
- The United States Tennis Association (USTA) — for supporting this program with grant funding and for the Red Ball format that opens the game up to everyone.
- Perinton Recreation and Parks — one of our valued Inclusion Partners, for their coaching, their courts, and their continued commitment to inclusive programming.
- Greater Buffalo Adaptive Sports — for lending Coach Caroline’s expertise and heart to the day.
- Rochester Accessible Adventures — our volunteers are the glue that’s making this stick!
This is what it looks like when a community decides that recreation belongs to everyone.

We wrapped up the day the only way that felt right — all together. So much fun!
