Join the Adventure: RAA & Capt LJ Tomboy Adventures Making Outdoor Fun More Accessible!

Welcome to our SPOTLIGHT ON…. series! Learn about businesses RAA is working with to Make Inclusion Happen and get you directly connected to new inclusive adventures!

At Capt LJ Tomboy Adventures, every outdoor enthusiast — regardless of experience level and ability — is invited to get outside and explore! As an active participant in the On The Canals Accessibility Education Program through the New York Power Authority and NYS Canal Corporation, Capt LJ (L.J. Fisher) has been working hard to enhance accessibility across her exciting offerings.

Accessibility in Action 🌟

Capt LJ’s inclusive approach starts right on their website with a dedicated Accessibility Tab, clearly outlining what participants can expect and how accommodations are available. From adaptive kayak equipment like supportive seats, outrigger supports, and paddle pedestals, to kayak chariots and transfer benches that help make water access easier, Capt LJ goes the extra mile to ensure everyone can join the fun on the water.

And that’s just SUMMER fun — there’s WINTER, too!

Capt LJ’s bag of resources includes sensory-friendly kits, explorer cue cards, headphones, monoculars and binoculars, yak-trax, and more! And stay tuned as Capt LJ continues to build out trail descriptions for upcoming land excursions!

What Adventures Await? 🌊

Capt LJ Tomboy Adventures offers a wide range of outdoor experiences:

  • Guided kayak excursions on the serene Erie Canal — including lock passage tours and sunset paddles.

  • Hiking and snowshoeing guided by a NYS DEC licensed pro

  • NYS Safe Boating Certification courses and on-water boat handling instruction.

All of these programs are perfect for beginners and seasoned adventurers alike — and now, with accessibility considerations front and center, they’re even more inclusive!

Capt LJ is a marvelous tour guide! But do note that even she cannot control the weather elements, so there will be times when the trail conditions just don’t work for everyone. That’s why we are trying out the Kettler Sled if we can get some good, non-muddy, snow!

On The Canals — Start the New Year With a First Day Hike! 🥾

Capt LJ will kick off the new year with exciting On The Canals events including a First Day Hike on January 1st — part of a statewide initiative to Get Offline, Get Outside! across New York. These hikes are free, beginner-friendly, and designed to celebrate starting the New Year in nature — complete with scenic canal trail routes and welcoming energy for folks of all abilities.

Whether you’re taking your first steps on the trail or seeking a brisk winter walk with new friends, this hike is a perfect way to kick off 2026 with fresh air, great company, and memories in the making.
