Free Summer Fun for Everyone: RAA Joins Webster Library’s Diverse Abilities Dialogues! ☀️
Summer in New York State is calling — and Rochester Accessible Adventures (RAA) is here to make sure everyone gets to answer!
We were thrilled to join the Webster Public Library for their Diverse Abilities Dialogues: Free Summer Ideas — a wonderful community conversation all about getting outside, getting moving, and getting connected this season, no matter your ability. It’s exactly the kind of gathering we live for: real talk about real opportunities, and a room full of people ready to explore what summer can be when inclusion is built right in.
Catch Our Segment!
The full conversation is packed with free, fun, and accessible ideas for the whole family — and RAA’s portion begins at the 19:35 mark. Grab a cool drink, settle in, and watch here:
👉 Diverse Abilities Dialogues: Free Summer Ideas (RAA segment starts at 19:35)
In our part of the dialogue, we shared a simple, joyful truth that drives everything we do: leisure is a human right, and the barriers to participation live in our environments — not in people. When a kayak launch has built in supports that keeps someone as independent as possible, when staff are trained and confident, when a trail welcomes wheels of every kind, suddenly summer opens up for all of us — together.
Your Free Starting Point: The DirectConnect Resource Guide
So where do you actually go to get started? That’s the best part — we’ve already done the legwork for you!
Our DirectConnect Resource Guide is your free, one-stop map to inclusive adventures, with a growing list of options across the Greater Rochester, Finger Lakes, and Western New York regions. Plus, this summer, you will find more ideas for Syracuse eastward!
The Guide connects you directly to recreation businesses and organizations that are enhancing their training and equipment and are genuinely excited to welcome you! So many of them have an Accessibility Tab on their website to help give you helpful information before you leave your house, and even have an Inclusion Point of Contact if you want to call and have any final questions answered before you hit the road.
Inside, you’ll find pathways to:
- Adaptive kayaking and cycling along the water
- Birding and nature exploration for quiet, soul-filling mornings
- Pickleball, fencing, sled hockey, and rock climbing for a little friendly challenge
- Art studios, museums, and community recreation when you want to create and connect
Children and adults, with and without disabilities, participating side by side — that’s the whole point.
Adventure Along the Erie Canalway: On the Canals
Looking for free summer fun with a side of New York history? Head to the water!
RAA is the proud consultant behind the On the Canals Accessibility Education Program (AEP) — a wonderful program of the New York Power Authority (NYPA) and the New York State Canal Corporation that’s making inclusive recreation possible across the entire 524-mile New York State Canal system. It’s a big, beautiful stretch of waterways and trails, and we’re working to make sure every mile of it welcomes people of all abilities.
Here’s how our work fits together: through the AEP, RAA trains and mentors the small businesses, municipalities, and recreation providers along the canal — our AEP partners — to operate inclusively whenever their doors are open. That means viewing their services through a lens of inclusion, building in adaptive equipment, and preparing their teams to welcome a broader community with confidence. Partners like Capt. LJ Tomboy Adventures, Genesee Valley Audubon Society, Rochester By Water, Stony Point Art Studio, Hudson Crossing Park, Elevator Alley, Erie Canal Museum — and so many more! are showing the region what’s possible when inclusion becomes the everyday standard rather than a once-a-week exception.
And the experiences they help power? Many of them are completely free. The On the Canals program offers no-cost excursions all season long — kayaking, cycling, boat tours, birding, wildlife hikes, and outdoor painting — with accessible and adaptive options woven right in. It’s a perfect, budget-friendly way to get moving, soak up the scenery, and make summer memories with the people you love.
Let’s Make This Your Most Inclusive Summer Yet!
Free. Active. Social. Welcoming. That’s the summer every New Yorker deserves — and it’s already out there waiting for you.
Start exploring with our DirectConnect Resource Guide, paddle into the On the Canals season, and don’t forget to watch the Diverse Abilities Dialogues for even more ideas to fill your calendar.
Have a question, an idea, or a place you’d love to see become more inclusive? We’d love to hear from you!
